Van Alen Institute Hosts Discussion—Beyond Zuccotti Park: Privatization of Public Assets and Public Space

Van Alen Books of Manhattan is hosting an open dialog based on Beyond Zuccotti Park. Questions surrounding the nature of, use of, and access to public space will be discussed by a panel of specialists.

Arthur Eisenberg, legal director of the New York Civil Liberties Union and author of “Some Unresolved Constitutional Questions,” an essay in BZP that focuses on the question of First Amendment rights surrounding the Occupy movement, will be a guest panelist. Eisenberg has been involved in more than 20 cases that have been present to the US Supreme Court, many of them focusing around First Amendment rights. He is the co-author of Rights of Candidates and Voters.

Quilian Riano, founder of DSGN AGNC, a research and design collaborative, will also be a panelist. Riano is a designer, writer, and educator currently working out of Brooklyn. He has collaborated on a variety of architectural design and research projects for Architecture 2030, Estudio Teddy Cruz, Archinect, and Places Journal. He currently teaches design and urban theory studies at Parsons The New School for Design.

Moses Gates, author of the forthcoming Hidden Cities: Travels to the Secret Corners of the World’s Great Metropolises; A Memoir of Urban Exploration and a city planner and urbanist is the final panel member. A self-proclaimed Gothamphile, as well as a demography professor.

Lynne Elizabeth, editor and contributor to BZP, will monitor the discussion.
